SUMMARY:4S SYMPOSIUM 2026\, May 4-8\, 2026\, Sardinia\, Italy
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Small Satellites Systems and Services — 4S — Symposium will take place May 4-8\, 2026 in Sardinia\, Italy. \n \nMore information is on the event’s website\, which says: \nAutonomous swarms of small drones and UAVs are now widely used in civil\, defense\, and commercial sectors. Powered by advanced sensors\, AI\, and communication systems\, these swarms can operate independently or as part of larger systems. \nIn space\, experimental swarm missions with small satellites have now been successful in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and precise formation flying\, a key capability for swarms\, has been demonstrated in Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO). More advanced small satellite missions are planned in LEO\, HEO\, Geostationary Orbit (GEO)\, and Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO)\, for applications ranging from Earth observation to space science. \nDeep space swarms supported by larger carrier spacecraft are becoming a reality\, with the first hitchhiking CubeSats now en route an asteroid\, and Moon/Mars orbiting swarm concepts being studied for launches through the 2030s. Other advanced ideas include “aggregated swarms” — small spacecraft joining to form larger structures\, potentially assisted by robotic assembly and 3D printing in space. \nThis year\, a special session will be dedicated on swarm missions. Authors are invited to submit their contribution on swarm missions and relevant technologies that will shape the future of space systems.

SUMMARY:IISL SPRING SPACE LAW SYMPOSIUM\, May 8\, 2026\, virtual\, 4:30-10:00 am ET
DESCRIPTION:The International Institute of Space Law (IISL)\, with the support of the Amsterdam Space Law & Sustainability Centre and the Durham University’s Space Research Centre\, will hold a virtual Spring Space Law Symposium on May 8\, 2026 from 10:30-16:00 Central European Summer Time (4:30-10:00 am Eastern Daylight Time). \nMore information\, registration instructions\, and the agenda are on the event’s website\, which says: \n\nOrganised by the IISL with the support of the Amsterdam Space Law & Sustainability Centre and Durham University Space Research Centre (SPARC)\, the IISL Spring Space Law Symposium 2026 will examine the extent to which the existing international legal framework governing outer space is capable of accommodating rapid technological and operational developments. Across three panels co-moderated by Dr PJ Blount\, Dr Ioana Bratu and Dr Laetitia Cesari\, the symposium considers how emerging technologies\, evolving uses of space\, and increasing environmental pressures challenge foundational principles of space law\, including jurisdiction\, responsibility\, and international cooperation. \n\n\nThe first panel addresses the legal implications of novel technological applications\, including suborbital transportation\, artificial intelligence\, and life sciences research in space\, alongside questions of intellectual property beyond territorial limits. The second panel turns to the resilience of established legal instruments\, notably the Outer Space Treaty regime\, in light of new operational realities such as satellite constellations\, blockchain-based governance tools\, and competing models of resource regulation. The third panel focuses on sustainability\, examining whether current legal doctrines sufficiently address issues of environmental protection\, space debris mitigation\, and the accountability of both state and non-state actors. \nThe symposium explores whether incremental adaptation of existing norms is adequate\, or whether more structural legal developments may be required to ensure the continued viability of space activities as a shared domain.

SUMMARY:POWER BREAKFAST: GUIDING THE GOLDEN DOME (GovExec)\, May 8\, 2026\, Reston\, VA\, 7:30-10:30 am ET
DESCRIPTION:GovExec’s Washington Technology will host a Power Breakfast on May 8\, 2026 on “Guiding the Golden Dome: Architecture\, Acquisition\, and the Future of Integrated Missile Defense.”  The in-person event takes place at Carahsoft Conference & Collaboration Center\, 11493 Sunset Hills Rd.\, Reston\, VA. \nMore information is on the event’s website\, which says: \nThe Golden Dome missile defense initiative marks a generational investment in layered\, integrated defense. By combining space-based interceptors\, advanced sensing\, and resilient command-and-control\, the $151 billion SHIELD contract vehicle reflects the urgency of emerging missile threats and highlights a significant opportunity for the defense industrial base. \nHowever\, the scope and scale of Golden Dome raise critical questions for industry: How will funding increase over time? How will architectural decisions affect cross-agency integration? How will acquisition strategies influence competition? And what does success look like from the DoD’s perspective?  \nDuring this Power Breakfast\, Washington Technology will bring together defense officials\, market analysts\, and industry executives to discuss Golden Dome’s funding profile\, architectural vision\, and acquisition roadmap\, enabling contractors to align their organizations for long-term participation in one of the defense sector’s most consequential modernization efforts. \n \n
