SUMMARY:3rd OF FIVE SPACEWALKS TO REPLACE ISS BATTERIES\, date TBD\, Earth orbit (NASA TV)
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE\, Oct 16:  NASA has postponed this spacewalk and the remaining two in the series until it more fully understands why a battery charge/discharge unit (BCDU) failed when the batteries installed on the first two spacewalks were integrated into the ISS power system.  Christina Koch and Jessica Meir will make an unplanned spacewalk no earlier than October 18 to replace the failed BCDU.  The schedule for the three remaining battery replacement spacewalks will be announced later. \nORIGINAL ENTRY:  Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) will conduct a series of five spacewalks to replace some of the original nickel-hydrogen batteries on the exterior of the space station with new lithium-ion batteries that were just delivered by Japan’s HTV-8 cargo spacecraft.  Astronauts have already replaced some of the batteries and a final round will take place next spring after the next HTV delivery. \nThe five spacewalks will be conducted on the following dates\, with crew assignments as of October 4\, 2019.  During an October 4 press briefing\, NASA ISS Program Manager Kirk Shireman and astronaut Megan McArthur\, Deputy Chief of the Astronaut Office\, stressed that they be learning as they go along so changes are possible. \nThe four U.S. Operating Segment (USOS) astronauts are NASA’s Christina Koch\, Drew Morgan and Jessica Meir and the European Space Agency’s Luca Parmitano. \nNASA TV will cover all of the spacewalks\, each of which will last about 6.5 hours. \nFifty-five USOS spacewalks — or extravehicular activities (EVAs) — have already taken place.  These are numbers 56-60. \nEVA 56:  October 6\, Koch and Morgan\nEVA 57:  October 11\, Koch and Morgan \nEVA 58:  October 16\, Morgan and Meir \nEVA 58 was revised and will now be the 1st all-female spacewalk (instead of EVA 59) with Koch and Meir replacing a faulty BCDU.  The date is no earlier than  October 18.  It is not part of the series of five battery-replacement EVAs. \nEVA 59:  October 21\, Koch and Meir (crew assignments could change)\nEVA 60:  October 25\, Meir and Parmitano (crew assignments could change)\nEVA 61: (presumably will now be the 5th battery replacement spacewalk) TBD \n
