DESCRIPTION:The Chemical Sciences Roundtable of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine will hold a workshop on “Astrochemistry: Discoveries to Inform Chemical Sciences & Engineering Communities” from November 8-9\, 2018 at the Keck Center\, 500 5th St.\, NW\, Washington\, DC. \nExciting discoveries are being made in astrochemistry—a multidisciplinary field that focuses on the chemical composition and processes in astronomical environments. Given the acceleration in discoveries in recent years with the installation of new facilities\, this workshop will \n(1) explore the chemistry of space—its novel chemicals and reaction mechanisms\n(2) discuss information from remote sensing through spectroscopy\n(3) consider discoveries from spacecraft missions in the solar system and laboratory studies of extraterrestrial samples \nUltimately\, the goal of the workshop is to explore how the methods and discoveries of astrochemistry might provide insights or opportunities for advancing the chemical sciences and engineering.
