SUMMARY:FINAL FLAREWELL TO ORIGINAL IRIDIUM SYSTEM\, Dec 5\, 2019\, virtual\, 12:00 pm ET (webcast)
DESCRIPTION:Iridium Communications will deorbit the last remaining satellite from its original constellation on December 5\, 2019.  To commemorate the end of that era\, Iridium CEO Matt Desch will host a live webcast from Iridium’s Satellite Network Operations Center to provide a behind-the-scenes look at how satellites are deorbited.  The webcast begins at 12:00 pm ET. \nIridium is a constellation of 66 operational satellites (plus spares) in low Earth orbit that provide mobile telephone and data communications. \nIridium is calling this the Final Flarewell (instead of farewell) because it means the end of Iridium flares\, which delighted or annoyed spectators depending on their point of view\, caused by sunlight glinting off the satellites at certain times of the day.  Iridium completed its replacement constellation of Iridium NEXT satellites last year and they were designed to avoid this effect\, which was troublesome for astronomers. \nMore information\, including how to ask questions\, is on the event’s website. \n
