SUMMARY:DEBATING NATIONAL SECURITY SPACE (SPI/Aerospace)\, Aug 29\, 2024\, DC\, 11:00 am-2:00 pm ET
DESCRIPTION:Update\, August 27:  The Zoom link is here.  Not clear if you have to register in advance to get in. \nUpdate\, August 25:  The title of the event has been changed to “Debating National Security Space” with “High Ground/High Fantasy: Defense Utility of Cislunar Space” as one of two panels. The other is “Exotic Space Warfighting: Importance of Sustained Maneuver.” State Department Assistant Secretary for Arms Control\, Verification\, and Compliance Mallory Stewart will give a keynote address. \nOriginal Entry: George Washington University’s Space Policy Institute and the Aerospace Corporation will hold an event on August 29\, 2024 from 11:00 am-2:00 pm ET on “High Ground/High Fantasy: Defense Utility of Cislunar Space” at SPI’s offices at 1957 E St.\, NW\, Room 602\, Washington\, DC. \nMore information is on the event’s website\, which says: \nThis event will feature a lively debate on the strategic importance of cislunar space in defense and national security operations. Join us at George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs – Lindner Family Commons Room 602 for an engaging discussion led by experts in space\, defense\, and national security policy. \nWith more interests on the Moon\, debates swirl around defense and national security of the Moon and cislunar space. For example\, with differing views\, one view argues that the United States Space Force should incorporate the Moon into doctrinal strategy and operational tactics. In opposition\, some voices argue that focusing on the Moon and cislunar space distracts from the United States Space Force’s core priorities to protect the national interests of the United States in space\, to provide space capabilities for joint operations\, and importantly to keep space secure\, stable\, and accessible. \nCan one piece of space be more vital and valuable to defense and national security than another area of space? Where will the unique challenges of the combined gravitational forces of the Earth and the Moon take us? Don’t miss out on this opportunity to gain insights into the future of the Moon and cislunar space! FOr more information\, you can read the debate paper here. \n*Note: This event is a hybrid event with both an onsite venue and online livestreaming. More details to be announced. Thank you for registering. \n
