DESCRIPTION:The United Nations designated June 30 as International Asteroid Day in 2016 in order to “observe each year at the international level the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia\, Russian Federation\, on 30 June 1908\, and to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard.” The decision was “was made based on a proposal by the Association of Space Explorers\, which was endorsed by Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).” \nSeveral organizations hold events around that date to raise public awareness of asteroids and the potential threat they could pose to Earth. \nAmong them: \n\nThe Asteroid Foundation’s annual Live program from Luxembourg on June 30.\nThe Asteroid Foundation has a list of other events\, some of which are on the 30th and others before or after.\nThe European Space Agency will broadcast Asteroid Day events on ESA TV beginning at 10:30 Central European Summer Time (4:30 am EDT) on June 30\nThe Planetary Society’s webinar “Defending Earth” on June 30
