POSTPONED AGAIN

LIVESTREAM OF INGENUITY HELICOPTER DATA ARRIVAL AND POST-FLIGHT BFG, Apr ??, 2021, virtual

Update, April 12:  NASA says it needs to send Ingenuity a software update, which will take some time.  It will set a new date for the first flight sometime next week.

Update, April 10NASA just announced a postponement of the first flight until no earlier than Wednesday, April 14, because of anomalous data returned during a test last night.  Assuming they follow the same schedule, if the flight takes place on April 14, the livestream of data returning and the press conference will be on April 15, but stay tuned for further updates.

Original Entry: As of April 6, NASA is planning the first flight of its Ingenuity helicopter on Mars on April 11.  The date could change, but for now these events are planned as follows.

  • April 9, pre-flight press briefing, 1:00 pm ET
  • April 12, livestream of data being returned to JPL’s Space Flight Operations Facility, 3:30 am ET
  • April, 12, post-flight press briefing, 11:00 am ET

The tiny (4-pound) helicopter is a technology demonstration to determine if powered flight can take place on Mars, where the atmosphere density is 1% of that at sea level on Earth, and gravity is 1/3 that of Earth.  This will be the first powered flight on another world.

The events will air on NASA Television, the NASA app, and the agency’s website, and will livestream on multiple agency social media platforms, including the JPL YouTube and Facebook channels.
