DESCRIPTION:NASA will have a special edition of Science Live on NASA TV in May 20\,2020 at 11:00 am ET with “exciting news” about the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST). \nThe episode will air live on NASA’s website\, NASA YouTube\, NASA Facebook and Twitter/Periscope. Members of the mission will respond to questions from the livestream chat in real time during the episode. Follow @NASA and @NASAWFIRST on Facebook and Twitter for additional information. \nWFIRST is the next large space telescope that will follow after the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)\, which itself is the follow on to the Hubble Space Telescope.  Hubble is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and is still operating in Earth orbit.  JWST has been delayed many times and is currently in integration and testing at Northrop Grumman\, its prime contractor.  NASA hoped to launch it in March 2021\, but the schedule has been impacted by COVID-19.  The launch date is under review. \nWFIRST was chosen in 2010 as the top priority of the most recent Decadal Survey on astronomy and astrophysics by the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine.  NASA could not begin the mission when planned because of overruns of JWST.   NASA has proposed terminating the program for the past two years\, but Congress rejected the proposal so it continues roughly on its schedule for launch in 2025.  NASA is again proposing it for termination in the FY2021 budget request\, but the announcement of this “exciting news” suggests the agency does not\, in fact\, want to terminate it.
