DESCRIPTION:NASA will hold a media briefing on January 18\, 2018 at 12:00 pm ET (9:00 am local time) at the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas\, NV to “discuss a recent experiment involving a new power source that could provide the safe\, efficient and plentiful energy needed for future robotic and human space exploration missions.”  It is the Kilopower project to demonstrate fission power systems technology.  Testing began in November 2017 as part of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate’s (STMD’s) Game Changing Development program. \nParticipants in the briefing are: \n\nSteve Jurczyk\, associate administrator of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate\nAngela Chambers\, manager of the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Criticality Safety Program\nMark Martinez\, president of Mission Support and Test Services\, LLC\, which manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site for the NNSA\nJanet Kavandi\, director of NASA’s Glenn Research Center\nLee Mason\, NASA’s principal technologist for power and energy storage\nPat McClure\, Kilopower project lead at Los Alamos\nMarc Gibson\, Kilopower lead engineer at Glenn Research Center\nDave Poston\, chief reactor designer at Los Alamos\n\nAudio of the briefing and associated slides will be webcast at the NASA Live website.
