As chief historian\, Dr. Barry has been a consultant for some of the most famous space movies of the decade. In 2017\, he joined us to talk about one of those movies\, Hidden Figures\, and we are so grateful to have him back. RSVP to john.shelton@mail.house.gov if you plan to come!  \nFor those of you new to the group\, Space Advocates is a non-partisan staff association that promotes awareness of space and related issues through monthly briefings. \nThe Race to the Moon\nIt’s been fifty years since humans first set foot upon the Moon\, a history that may seem well known to many. What more could remain to be said about a story that has been told and retold in countless forms? As it turns out: a lot. \nPrepare for some surprises\, because there really was a race to the Moon in the 1960s – and it was a lot closer than you think. With the perspective of half a century\, and with insights coming from declassified Soviet and US archival material\, we now know more about this story\, challenging the popular narrative. \nInfo on Our Speaker\nDr. Bill Barry became NASA’s sixth Chief Historian in September 2010. He began work at NASA in 2001 after retiring from a 22-year career in the US Air Force.  Initially\, he worked in NASA’s international relations office\, and then served as the NASA European Representative at the United States Embassy in Paris from 2007-2010\, before being appointed Chief Historian. A graduate\, with honors\, of the United States Air Force Academy (1979)\, he also holds a Masters Degree from Stanford University (1987) and a Doctorate from Oxford University (1996). His doctoral dissertation\, “The Missile Design Bureaux and Soviet Manned Space Policy 1953–1970” won the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics History Manuscript Award in 2000.
