DESCRIPTION:The Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) will hold a hearing on January 12\, 2017 at 9:30 am ET in G50 Dirksen Senate Office Building on the nomination of Gen. James Mattis (Ret) to be Secretary of Defense (SecDef).   He will be the only witness. \nMattis is a retired Marine Corps General\, who will need a special waiver from Congress to serve as SecDef because he retired only 3 years ago.   \nAs explained in a report from the Congressional Research Service\, by law\, commissioned officers must be retired for at least 7 years before serving as SecDef to ensure the principle of civilian control of the military.  SASC will consider legislation to provide that waiver after the nomination hearing.  Congress has granted only one waiver since the provision was put into law in 1947.  That was for Army General George C. Marshall in 1950.  SASC will hold a hearing on civilian control of the military on January 10 at 9:30 am in 216 Hart Senate Office Building. \nTimes\, dates and witnesses for congressional hearings are subject to change; check the committee’s website for up to date information.  Most committees webcast their hearings on their websites or YouTube channels.
