SUMMARY:SASC NOMINATION HRG FOR MARK ESPER TO BE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE\, July 16\, 2019\, DC\, 9:30 am ET (webcast)
DESCRIPTION:The Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) will hold a hearing on the nomination of Mark Esper to be Secretary of Defense (SecDef) on July 16\, 2019 am ET in G-50 Dirksen Senate Office Building.  The committee webcasts its hearings on its website. \nEsper is the only witness. \nIf confirmed\, Esper will replace James Mattis\, who left on January 1.  Patrick Shanahan had been serving as Acting SecDef and was expected to be nominated to replace Mattis\, but withdrew from consideration.  Esper\, who has been serving as Secretary of the Army\, replaced Shanahan as Acting SecDef\, but must step down from that role and return to his position as Secretary of the Army while his nomination for the permanent SecDef position is considered by the Senate.  Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer will serve as Acting SecDef during that time.  To make it as short as possible\, SASC said it will waive its 7-day rule between receiving a nomination and voting on it.
