SUMMARY:SATELLITE-BASED SERVICES AT RISK? (AGU/SSA)\, Feb 17\, 2021\, virtual\, 2:00 pm ET
DESCRIPTION:The American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the Satellite Safety Alliance (SSA) will hold a webinar on February 17\, 2021 at 2:00 pm ET on “Satellite-Based Services at Risk?” \nMore information and registration instructions are on the event’s website. It says: \nWhat would your day be like without satellites? These technologies underpin the modern food system\, enable just-in-time manufacturing\, drive our global supply chains\, keep planes and helicopters safely flying and ensure we know when hazardous weather threatens. And they all run on airwaves. \nBut a single\, speculative company could put all of that at risk. Harmful interference in this case does not mean slower Wi-Fi or an occasional dropped cell phone call. It means less safe airline travel\, the disruption of life-saving weather information and the degradation of emergency communications. \nCongress just passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)\, which included safeguards for vital SATCOM and GPS services\, and seeks to avoid further actions harming real time weather information. But there is still work to be done. \nPlease join the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the Satellite Safety Alliance (SSA) with government and industry experts for a briefing on how SATCOM\, weather data and GPS technologies can be best shielded from harmful interference and how to create a brighter future for critical communications across the nation. \nThe “single speculative company” referred to apparently is Ligado based on other information on SSA’s website.
