DESCRIPTION:The American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR)\,  the Center for Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS)\, the  Commercial Spaceflight Federation (CSF)\, and Rep. Brian Babin (chair of the Space Subcommittee of the House Science\, Space\, and Technology Committee) will host a panel discussion on April 20\, 2017 from 9:00-10:30 am ET in 2325 Rayburn House Office Building.  The topic is “Scientists Bringing International Space Station Research Down to Earth.” \n The event is free\, but pre-registration  is required.   \n The emailed announcement from CSF is reproduced below: \n  \nMore and more scientists are advancing research onboard the International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Lab. With the space station’s functional maturity\, continuity in transportation\, and support from six full-time crew members\, utilization of this unique microgravity environment will only continue to expand.  \nYou are invited to learn about the innovative research taking place on the ISS during a Congressional Science Panel\, “Scientists Bringing International Space Station Research Down to Earth.” You will join U.S. Congressional staff members to hear case studies from ISS project scientists and learn about the incredible advantages of utilizing microgravity to conduct life and physical sciences research that benefits the nation.  \nDate: Thursday\, April 20\, 2017 Time: 9:00 – 10:30 AM Location: Rayburn House Office Building\, Room 2325 Light refreshments will be served  \nThis special event is hosted by the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR) and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS)\, and is sponsored by U.S. Representative Brian Babin. \n Dr. Michael Roberts  \n Deputy Chief Scientist\, CASIS Moderator \nDr. Roberts is a former NASA-funded researcher who conducted experiments on the Space Shuttle and ISS focused on plant-microbe interactions and water recovery in microgravity.  \nSamantha McBride Ph.D. Candidate\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology \nISS Research Focus: Using microgravity to study problems in water engineering and to better understand water resource recovery toward addressing global health and poverty issues. \n Dr. Mark Weislogel Professor\, Portland State University \n   \nISS Research Focus: Studying the movement of fluids in space and how this knowledge can be applied to everyday use\, such as the low-gravity coffee cup Dr. Weislogel designed for astronauts. \nDr. Rasha Hammameih Director\, Integrative Systems Biology U.S. Army Medical Research   \nISS Research Focus: Increasing understanding of tissue healing in microgravity\, potentially revealing biologically relevant pathways for the next generation of wound-healing therapies.  \nDr. Anna-Lisa Paul Professor\, University of Florida ASGSR President-elect  \nISS Research Focus: Plant research in microgravity toward improved understanding for growing crops in marginal lands and harsh environments in space and on Earth.
