LAUNCH OF DOUBLE ASTEROID REDIRECTION TEST (DART), Nov 24, 2021, Vandenberg, 1:21 am ET (Nov 23, 10:21 pm PT)

Update, November 21: The launch time has been refined by 1 minute and is now 10:21 pm PST on November 23/1:21 am EST November 24. Watch here:  https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1dRKZloedWDJB (NASA) or here https://www.spacex.com/launches/index.html (SpaceX)

Original Entry: NASA is scheduled to launch the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft on November 24, 2021 at 1:20 am ET (November 23, 10:20 pm local time at the launch site) from Vandenberg Space Force Base, CA.

The DART spacecraft will impact the tiny moon of a small asteroid (hence the “double asteroid” terminology) to determine if this kinetic impact method can change an asteroid’s trajectory as part of NASA’s planetary defense mission.

November 24 is the opening of a long launch window that closes on February 15, 2022.  DART can launch on any of 84 opportunities during that time period.  Each day is an instantaneous launch window at about the same time.
