PRESIDENT BIDEN ADDRESSES JOINT SESSION OF CONGRESS, Apr 28, 2021, 9:00 pm ET

President Joe Biden will address a joint session of Congress on April 28, 2021 at 9:00 pm ET.  It will be broadcast on major news networks. It is similar to a State of the Union (SOTU) address, but SOTUs are not given in the first year of a new presidency.

This speech will take place on Biden’s 99th day in office.

It will not look like an SOTU either. According to the Washington Post, because of COVID-19, only about 200 people instead of 1,600 people will be in the House chamber. The President will have few guests in the presidential box and Representatives and Senators are not allowed any guests. Only one of the Supreme Court justices will be there (Chief Justice Roberts), no cabinet secretaries, and only the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Gen. Mark Milley) instead of all of them.

In a historic first, the two people sitting directly behind him — the Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate — will both be women:  Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Kamala Harris. (The Vice President of the United States is also the President of the Senate.)
