Event Navigation
GVF will hold a webinar on November 17, 2022 at 3:00 pm UK time/10:00 am US Eastern time on the topic of “Space Sustainability: Is It Too Late?”
More information is on the event’s website, which says:
Space sustainability has attained a top position on the satellite industry agenda and increasingly it is an important topic for governments and international organizations such as the UN and ITU. The issue extends to preserving the planet’s orbital assets as essential for driving sustainability, security, and development on Earth. However, much of the framework to ensuring space sustainability is “to be determined”. Questions such as who regulates and what are the rules are currently unanswered. Complicating matters is the rapidly increasing use of space by governments for military and civilian purposes along with use by private companies – particularly in low earth orbit (LEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO). Development of anti-satellite weapons, and the resulting debris fields created by the testing of such weapons, has heightened the need to develop effective and realistic rules as reports of in-obit near-collisions become frequent. The Kessler Syndrome — which envisions a scenario in which the density of objects in LEO is high enough that collisions between objects could cause a cascade in which each collision generates space debris that increases the likelihood of further collisions – has moved from the realm of science fiction to one of an increasingly realistic risk.
This webinar will explore the current situation and efforts underway to bring order to the largely unregulated space environment. Key to the exploration will be answering the question of whether it is too late to ensure a safe and sustainable space environment.
