Event Navigation
Update, January 28: Speaker Pelosi and President Trump have agreed on February 5 as the new date.
Update, January 23: Pelosi has postponed the State of the Union address until after the government reopens. Initially she wrote Trump and suggested that security concerns were the major reason to find a new date, but Trump countered that the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service (both of whose agents are being required to work without pay during the shutdown) assured him they could ensure security and he planned to go ahead. Pelosi then wrote again and made it clear that the House will not pass a required resolution to permit him to use the House chamber to address Congress. She said she looked forward to hearing from the President at a mutually convenient date once he signs legislation to reopen shuttered federal departments and agencies.
Original entry: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has invited President Trump to present the annual State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on January 29, 2019. It usually takes place at 9:00 pm ET and is televised by the major TV networks.
