UN/CHINA ANNOUNCEMENT OF EXPERIMENTS FOR CHINESE SPACE STATION, June 12, 2019, Vienna, Austria

On June 12, 2019, the United Nations Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) and the China Manned Space Agency will announce the international scientific experiments that have been selected to fly on the China Space Station (CSS) when it is in orbit.

CSS is three-module space station that China plans to have completely assembled in orbit in 2022. In May 2018, China invited U.N. member states to propose experiments to fly on the CSS as part of an effort to expand international cooperation in space and make space utilization available to more countries.

The announcement will be made at UNCOPOUS’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria from 13:00-14:00 CEST (7:00-8:00 am EDT).

The emailed announcement if the event, which does not indicate if there will be a webcast, is reproduced below.

Selected Experiments on board the China Space Station

 Wednesday, 12 June 2019

13:00-14:00

Board Room D, the 4 th floor, Building C, Vienna International Centre

VIENNA, 29 May (United Nations Information Service) – In May 2018, the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) published an “Announcement of Opportunity” inviting Member States to submit applications to conduct scientific experiments on board the China Space Station (CSS). This opportunity is provided through the United Nations/China Cooperation on the Utilization of the CSS, a forward-looking initiative to open the CSS to all countries and create a new paradigm in building capabilities in space science and technology, in particular for developing countries.

Through this initiative, UNOOSA, with the generous support and collaboration of the Government of China, is advancing international cooperation in space science and technology for peaceful purposes, in particular for developing countries, and helping all nations enhance the use of space for sustainable development, thereby contributing to the fulfillment of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Building on the widespread interest and positive results from the application process, the preliminary selection activities and the final selection process, this joint event by UNOOSA and the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) will announce  the outcome of the final selection. The event will be followed by a reception from 14:00-15:00 on the same day.
