CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL CEREMONY INCL “HIDDEN FIGURES,” Sept 18, 2024, DC, 3:00 pm ET

House Speaker Mike Johnson will preside over a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony in Emancipation Hall at the U.S. Capitol on September 18, 2024 at 3:00 pm ET.

Among the honorees are four black women who were instrumental in the early day of the space program as computers (people who made mathematical computations before the era of mechanical computers), mathematicians and engineers and have become renowned as “Hidden Figures” based on the book of that title.

  • Congressional Gold Medal to Katherine Johnson, in recognition of her service to the United States as a mathematician
  • Congressional Gold Medal to Dr. Christine Darden, for her service to the United States as an aeronautical engineer
  • Congressional Gold Medals in commemoration of the lives of Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, in recognition of their service to the United States during the space race
  • Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of all the women who served as computers, mathematicians, and engineers at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics and NASA between the 1930s and the 1970s.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson will be one of the speakers at the event, which will be livestreamed on the Speaker’s YouTube channel.
