ESA PRESS BRIEFING ON RESULTS OF FLY! FEASIBILITY STUDY, Feb 14, 2025, Cologne, Germany/online, 4:00 am ET/10:00 am CET

ESA will hold a press briefing on February 14, 2025 at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany from 10:00-11:00 Central European Time (4:00-5:00 am Eastern Standard Time) to discuss the “completion and the success of ESA’s FLY! Feasibility Study.”

The study concluded that it is technically feasible to fly someone with a physical disability to the International Space Station for a 6-month mission.  ESA selected the U.K.’s John McFall as a Reserve Astronaut in 2022.  He is a former Paralympic athlete and orthopaedic surgeon who became a leg amputee after a motorcycle accident.

He has been participating in a study, Fly!,  to determine if he or others similarly disabled can fly in space. The study determined yes, it is possible, and he will now move on to the next phase, Fly! Mission Ready.

The press conference will take place in person and be livestreamed on ESA Web TV.

Participants are:

  • Daniel Neuenschwander, ESA Director of Human and Robotic Exploration
  • John McFall, Member of the ESA Astronaut Reserve & Fly! Subject Matter Expert
  • Jerome Reineix, Fly! Study Manager
  • Alessandro Alcibiade, Fly! Flight Surgeon
