INTERNATIONAL ASTEROID DAY, June 30, 2024, global
Event Navigation
The United Nations designated June 30 as International Asteroid Day in 2016 in order to “observe each year at the international level the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia, Russian Federation, on 30 June 1908, and to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard.” The decision was “was made based on a proposal by the Association of Space Explorers, which was endorsed by Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).”
Several organizations hold events around that date to raise public awareness of asteroids and the potential threat they could pose to Earth. More information is on the Asteroid Day website.
