LAUNCH OF JAXA’S XRISM AND SLIM SPACECRAFT, Sept 6, 2023, Tanegashima, Japan, 7:42 pm EDT (Sept 7, 8:42 am in Japan) Livestream begins 7:10 pm EDT

Update, September 4:  The launch has been rescheduled for September 7, 08:42:11 Japan Standard Time (September 6, 7:42:11 Eastern Daylight Time).  The livestream will begin at 7:10 pm EDT.


Update, August 27, 8:10 pm ET:  JAXA and MHI Launch Services just scrubbed the launch, about 10 minutes after the livestream began (so about 20 minutes before launch), due to bad weather.

Update, August 24: The launch date has slipped a day due to bad weather. Launch now is scheduled for August 26, 8:30:15 pm EDT (August 27, 9:30:15 am JST).

Update, August 23: JAXA’s livestream will begin at August 25 at 8:00 pm EDT (9:00 am August 26 JST).


Update, August 4:  The launch is scheduled for August 26, 9:34:57 am Japan Standard Time, which is August 25 8:34:57 pm Eastern Daylight Time.  The press kit for XRISM (pronounced Chrism) is now available.

Original Entry: The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency plans to launch the X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) x-ray telescope and the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) lunar lander on an H-IIA rocket from Tanageshima on August 26, 2023. The launch window is open through September 15.
