NASA MEDIA BRIEFING UPDATE ON THE DART MISSION, Oct 11, 2022, DC/virtual, 2:00 pm ET
Event Navigation
NASA will hold a media briefing on October 11, 2022 at NASA HQ in Washington, DC at 2:00 pm ET to provide an update on the DART mission that impacted the moon of an asteroid on September 26. Scientists are busy calculating how much the moon’s orbit around its parent asteroid changed as a result of the impact.
DART is a planetary protection test of a method of changing an asteroid’s trajectory if it could collide with Earth. This one, Didymos, and its moon, Dimorphos, pose no threat to Earth.
Briefing participants were not listed in NASA’s October 7 press release, but they will ” include leaders from NASA, the Italian Space Agency, and the DART mission team.” Italy provided a cubesat, LICIACube, that rode along with DART and separated before the impact so it could take photos to transmit back to Earth (DART itself was destroyed). Several photos already have been made public.
The briefing is in-person at NASA HQ, but media participation also may be virtual and the event will air on NASA TV, the NASA app, and NASA Live.
