Natl Acad CMTE ON PLANETARY PROTECTION FOR MARTIAN MOONS, Nov 7-9, 2017, London

The National Academies Committee on Planetary Protection Requirements for Sample-Return Missions from Martian Moons will meet from November 7-9, 2017 at the Imperial Hotel, 61-66 Russell Square, London, WC1B 5BB, England.  Some sessions are closed.   There is NO remote connection for this meeting.

The agenda is posted on the Academies’ Current Projects website.

The committee’s statement of task and membership are posted on the committee’s website.  Briefly, the committee is to review and assess recent research sponsored by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) on the need for planetary protection requirements for sample-return missions to the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos because they may once have been part of Mars and ejected from the planet during a cosmic collision.  Since there is a chance that life once existed on Mars, it might therefore have been on what is now the two moons.
