The National Air and Space Museum (NASM) will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Chandra X-ray Observatory at the John H. Glenn Lecture in Space History on September 25, 2024. The event will be from 8:00-9:00 pm ET at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA and online via YouTube.
Participants are:
- Ellen Stofan, Under Secretary for Science and Research at the Smithsonian (moderator)
- Eileen Collins, commander of the space shuttle mission that deployed Chandra, STS-93
- Cady Coleman, mission specialist, STS-93
- Patrick Slane, senior astrophysicist, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory’s Chandra X-ray Center
- Kimberly Arcand, visualization scientist emerging technology lead for the Chandra X-ray Observatory who is a leading expert in studying the perception and comprehension of high-energy data visualization

NASA is proposing to essentially terminate Chandra in its FY2025 budget request due to budget contraints.
