April 12 is celebrated around the world as Yuri’s Night to commemorate the spaceflight of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first human to orbit the Earth on April 12, 1961.

April 12 also is the anniversary of the first flight of the U.S. space shuttle (Columbia) 20 years later on April 12, 1981. The date was coincidental — the launch was scheduled for April 10, but postponed two days because of a computer glitch.
