Senate Subcommittee Approves FY2014 Defense Approps Bill

The Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee approved its version of the FY2014 defense appropriations bill this morning.

The bill would fund DOD’s base budget at $516.4 billion plus $77.8 billion for Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO, e.g. the war in Afghanistan), for a total of $594.4 billion.   By comparison, the House-passed bill approves $512.5 billion for the base budget and $85.8 billion for OCO, for a total of $598.3 billion.  Neither bill takes sequestration into account.

Full committee markup is scheduled for Thursday.

National security space programs did not rise to the level of debate during the markup and are not mentioned in the committee’s press release.  More details on how they fared should be available when the committee posts the report to accompany the bill, probably as part of full committee markup.
