Video Shows Latest Test of SpaceX's Grasshopper Rocket

New video released yesterday shows another SpaceX test of its Vertical Takeoff Vertical Landing (VTVL) Grasshopper rocket on June 14.  The rocket achieved a new altitude record of 325 meters (1066 feet).

The test, at SpaceX’s Texas facilities, is part of the company’s efforts to develop reusable launch vehicles.  A video posted on YouTube by the company shows the Grasshopper ascending to 325 meters, holding there briefly, and then settling back down on its launch pad.    This test used an additional sensor to enable a more precise landing.

This is the fifth test since September 2012.   The previous altitude record was 80.1 meters (262.8 feet), achieved on March 7, 2013.  Grasshopper is a technology development vehicle using a Falcon 9 rocket first stage tank, a Merlin 1D engine, and four steel and aluminum landing legs.
